What it shows

The snow history of about 22,000 glaciers, stacked like layers of rock. Each line is one glacier, 1984 on the left and 2025 on the right, sorted from the sharpest decline to the most stable and then folded so that it looks like geology. You see at a glance how many glaciers follow each kind of path.

Data

For each glacier with at least 12 observed years out of 42, the share of its surface covered by snow each year, from 0% to 100%. Gaps are filled by a straight line and the curves are slightly smoothed.

How it is made

The sorted table is bent by waves, coloured with a palette and lit like a relief. The variants change the palette (aurora, ember, marble, swirl).
